From his sickbed last winter, Vin Scully found time to pen an essay for MLB dot com on Gil Hodges which I know helped sway voters on the Hall of Fame Committee to finally elect Gil to Cooperstown.

Vin had so much respect for him that he called me two months ago and asked if we could send him a Gil Hodges bobblehead for his office. In my 40- plus years in baseball, I never met a more humble famous person. He never refused a photo, always signed an autograph and always called everyone by their first name.

I was proud to call him a friend. Yesterday Vin passed away at the age of 94. R.I.P.
