The bond between Doc and Straw, two of the most iconic figures in Mets history, is strong.

About a month ago, Straw suffered a pretty severe heart attack that really scared him. His ministry travel was severely restricted and he stayed near his home the in the St. Louis area.

But Darryl told me there was no way he wasn’t going to be at Citi Field yesterday to see Dwight’s No. 16 get retired. Straw made it through the rain even though he wasn’t feeling great. In fact in the morning, it was touch and go if he would make the ceremony at all. Darryl was determined not to miss his friend’s big day.

Doc had no idea he was coming and when the two embraced at Citi Field hours before the festivities, it was really a sight to see. Darryl left shortly after No. 16 was raised to the roof so he could get some rest before his flight home.

The two old teammates speak daily now and their ties are as strong as ever. Both guys are in a good place. Doc said he can’t wait for June 1 when Darryl’s No. 18 will be retired. He will be there for sure. That’s what friends are for.
