Happy Retirement, Jay Bruce
By Jay Horwitz
I wish Jay Bruce nothing but the best in his retirement. He was a class act on and off the field.
Every PR person needs a go to person in the good times and the bad and Jay was that person for me.
Whether he hit a game-winning home run or struck out with the bases loaded, Jay would always greet me in the clubhouse with the same line, “Let me know what you need from me, I will be at my locker.”
A few months ago after a member of our Mets family died, I called Jay and asked him if he could contribute to a fund we started for the person’s children. Hours later Jay sent along a sizable check for the kids. That was the kind of person Jay is.
His 14-year career was filled with accolade after accolade but for me, stats or awards will never define who Jay Bruce was. In my mind, he will always be the person I went to when I needed help.
