I lost a dear friend today. Dan Castellano, who covered the Mets for 14 years for Newark Star Ledger, died in his home in Claremont, Florida after a long illness.

He was our beat writer from 1978–1992. In fact, in the spring of 1980, Danny was the one who called me to say he heard I was getting the job as PR director for the team.

He was diligent at his job, fair with his writing and perhaps most importantly, he was someone you could trust. Danny was beloved by so many of our players. When he took sick a few years ago, Lee Mazzilli, John Franco and Darryl Strawberry were just some of the guys who sent him videos.

I spoke to Maz and Johnny this morning and they each used the same phrase to describe him, “A True Gentleman.” R.I.P Danny.
