Strawberry’s First Career Home Run
By Jay Horwitz
I have seen most of Darryl Stawberry’s team leading 252 Mets home runs.
None were cheap, that’s for sure and none were more majestic that his first one, which he hit thirty-eight years ago today against the Pirates’ Lee Tunnell in Pittsburgh.
No one came up with more pressure than Darryl. He was the number one over all pick in the country. He was supposed to be our savior, who was expected to lead us to the promise land.
He did that three years later. Nowadays, Straw and his wife Tracy are ministers, doing good work, traveling around the country speaking to children about the evils of opioids. I am proud to be his friend for over forty years.
