The Anniversary of Gary Carter & the Mets
While I was watching Monday Night Football 37 years ago today (Dec. 10), I almost fell out of my chair.
The late, great Howard Cosell had announced that ABC sports just learned that the Mets had acquired All Star catcher Gary Carter from the Expos for four players. In a year’s time he would help the Mets to their second World Championship.
More than has playing abilities though, Gary Carter was one of the most decent people I was fortunate enough to meet in this game. He loved to work in the community, loved kids and never once turned away from an autograph request. His knees always ached but he never complained.
He might go 0–4 but as long as Doc, Sid or Bobby O pitched well, Gary was happy. Here’s to you Kid, you were the best.
