The Greatest April Fools’ Prank Ever
By Jay Horwitz
In this, the age of Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok, there is no way we could have pulled off the prank we did 36 years ago this week.
The cover story on the April Fools edition of Sports Illustrated told of “The Curious Case of Sidd Finch”. The article written by late and great George Plimpton said we had signed this mythological right hander Sidd Finch from Tibet who pitched with one boot and could throw an 168 MPH fastball. For a few days we had believers. It was great fun while it lasted. Now three decades later, I am proud to have played a small part in perhaps the greatest gag in the history of sports.
