The Mets Got Mr. Wright
By Jay Horwitz
Time does fly. Can’t believe its’s 20 years ago today that we drafted an 18-year old David Wright from Hickory High School.
I tell everyone that as good a player David was, and he was pretty good, he was a 10 times better person. Proud that I helped David get into his first MLB locker room and we kind of skirted the law. A few weeks before his promotion to Shea Stadium in July 2004, he was looking to visit Scott Rolen on the National League All-Star clubhouse in Houston.
David was looking for advice from Scott on the do’s and don’t of becoming a major leaguer. To gain Mr. Wright access, I wrote him a pass which read, David Wright, columnist Virginia Pilot. The two third basemen spoke for about an hour. To the best of my knowledge, David never wrote a story.
